In the summer of 2001, MARIAH CAREY was on the verge of a total melt down. As the weeks went on, she began to act more unstable and nutty. It all started when she made a strange, unplanned surprise appearance on MTV's Total Request Live pushing an ice cream cart and pulling off her tee-shirt to expose her silicon-enhanced breasts. When the flabbergasted host tried to cut to a commercial, she wouldn't let him get a word in edgewise. In the early hours of July 25, Mariah posted this cryptic message on her official web site. (Her mortified handlers subsequently removed this rare message and have fought in court to keep this rant from the public.) That evening, Mariah’s emotional breakdown climaxed with a failed suicide attempt at the swanky Tribeca Grand Hotel. The very next day the busty pop diva checked into a New York hospital for "exhaustion." Appropriately, her next album of songs from the flop film Glitter was released a few weeks later on the morning of 9/11.
